From Jeff Carter:
"The album is near-complete. We're doing mastering and very very finicky little edits right now...Not long now
September 10 2010
From Jeff Carter who is producing the new album along with Gord and Sandy:
"Hey everyone. Album recording is going into the "wrapping up" stages fairly quickly now. The final takes are recorded for almost all of the songs, and the arrangements and edits (for all but 2 tracks) are pretty much done. Just final mixes and mastering left to do for most of them now. Numb has been completely revised a few times to get the feel and tone exactly right, but other than that, the whole process has been very smooth, and very enjoyable. :D There's a great new track called " light up " about one partner in a relationship getting excited around someone other than their partner...it's got an intense, grungy, even a little bit angry / jealous vibe to it, which is a new thing I think for a Spoons track. "Escape with you" is the new track featuring Sandy on lead vocals. It has a bit of a Cardigans vibe, and I think if you haven't heard Sandy really "go for it" vocally before ( like when she sings quiet world live ) you're in for a pleasant surprise. :o There's a fair bit of creative experimentation happening in this album, some very new types of synth sounds along with the vintage analog synths, and some unique editing and processing techniques, especially in B-movie and Numb.... but all of it is done in a very musical way, that I'm quite excited about. Gord's lyrics are some of the best he has ever written, and Sandy's bass parts are creatively and technically on fire. The whole album has developed a cohesive "feel" that almost makes each song like a chapter in a story. We're doing photos on Sunday so I can develop the final artwork, and we have some interesting ideas about that as well. We'll keep you updated, but it won't be to long now....we just have to think of a title for it !..."

New Album recording update from Gord:
"Recording is really moving along now. Apart from the two songs you know, there's one about a band headed to California called Star Maps, a dark techno tune titled Words Will Smash Walls, a song about an on-screen relationship called B Movie and a very poppy summer tune Sandy is singing titled Escape With You. We also just started work on the epic album closer, yet untitled, and still need to wrap up Numb. I think this is going to be the best Spoons album ever. The buzz about the songs has been amazing."

From Jeff Carter who is producing the new album along with Gord and Sandy:
"Just an update for everybody....we've pretty-much finished the recording and mixing for "numb" and 2 other new tracks. There's several more in the in-between stages. Artwork concepts and sketches are being put together, and things are rolling along quickly. A major label has definitely shown interest, and details are being worked out. Thanks everyone for all your interest in the new stuff...it's coming along really well and we'll keep you updated about when it's release-ready ect.

30 Years ago in 1980 the band Spoons released their very first single on Mannequin Records titled After The Institution b/w My Job. It was a strange little slice of Gonzo New Wave with an infusion of Talking Heads circa 1977. Check it out here.
I remember calling CFNY in 1984 and talking to Sandy in the studio asking about the single and whether it would ever be re-released and how many were pressed. Only 1000 of the singles were pressed and they have become the single most sought after Spoons related rarity, very seldom appearing on Ebay and if so selling for hundreds of dollars.
On Friday April 30th Spoons will celebrate this milestone by holding a special 30th Anniversary concert at Tattoo Rock Parlour in Toronto - located at 567 Queen Street West (416-703-5488). Doors open at 8PM with show from 9-10:30 sharp. Meet and Greet to follow. There will be no opening act. Tickets are $15 at the door only.
